Somo Global Hack day: Exploring the Apple watch

Role: Hack day facilitator, Team lead, Product designer and Project manager

What is Somo global

Somo are a digital agency who go above and beyond to implement and educate the benefits of innovative and new technologies could have for existing and potential clients.

“Somo was born in the throes of the mobile revolution. We cut our teeth showing brands how to capitalise on the growing trend of mobile consumption, helping them innovate and express themselves in a whole new medium, with new demands and new possibilities. We have always thought differently, because our very inception was borne out of doing things that had never been done before. It’s this perspective that has guided us ever since.”

Hack story

Apple had recently released the first Apple watch with a range of both similar and different features typically associated with wearables. To increase the internal knowledge I planned, facilitated and participated in our wearables hack day (I didn’t want to miss out). 6 teams from across Bristol’s tech hub were invited to participate.

Objective

Over the past 12 months there has been significant growth in the wearables market with an estimated value of $7 billion in 2015. This rise has seen users flock to their respective devices. However, the arrival of the Apple Watch into this market has sparked questions as to which wearable is best.

Team deliverable

Kardia an Apple watch app utilises the heart rate sensor to helps users who suffer from Tachycardia, a heart rhythm disorder suffered by 4.4 million people in the USA.

Outcome

Unfortunately we did not win the hack day but picked up the “social awareness award”. Intrigued about Kardia’s potential, I collaborated with a iOS developer to see whether we could make the video deliverable a reality.
